Bose SoundLink Home: Setting Up a Small Listening Space

A practical guide to placing Bose SoundLink Home on a desk or shelf, using USB audio and planning a matching stereo pair.

Bose SoundLink Home: Setting Up a Small Listening Space

What You're Buying

The Bose SoundLink Home is a rechargeable Bluetooth speaker with an aluminium frame and fabric grille. It suits a listening spot on a desk, shelf or side table, with the option to move it when your routine changes.

How It Works

Pair a phone through its Bluetooth settings, or connect a computer using the USB-C-to-USB-A cable. For USB playback, you may need to select SoundLink Home as the computer's audio output. Pause the current source before starting playback from another.

There is no Bose app or Bose Connect app support. Everyday control comes from the speaker's buttons and the connected device, so check that this approach fits how you like to listen.

Why We Chose It

We chose it for a specific use: keeping a compact speaker in a dry indoor listening space, with USB audio available when a laptop is nearby. A little attention to placement makes that setup more practical.

  • Start with the base: stand it upright on its rubber base on a level, stable surface.
  • Leave some clearance: Bose recommends at least 6.4 mm between the speaker and nearby walls or surfaces.
  • Choose a dry, open spot: avoid enclosed cabinets, heat-producing equipment and places exposed to splashes. SoundLink Home has no water or dust protection rating.

What Sets It Apart

Two SoundLink Home speakers can provide separate left and right channels in Stereo Mode, including when the primary speaker receives USB audio. This pairing works with another SoundLink Home only; it does not extend to other Bose Bluetooth speakers, smart speakers or soundbars.

For a stereo listening spot, Bose recommends keeping the pair within three metres of each other, unobstructed and facing you, with equal distance from your seat to each speaker. In Stereo Mode, the primary speaker accepts only one connected source device at a time.

A built-in microphone also supports phone calls. That may be useful at a desk, although a shared room is worth considering before putting a call on speaker.

Why We Recommend It

Consider SoundLink Home if your priority is a small indoor listening setup with straightforward controls and an optional matching stereo pair. Think through the surface, cable route and charging point before choosing where it will sit.

Bose rates playback at up to nine hours, tested over Bluetooth at 50% volume and 20–25°C. Actual runtime depends on volume, content and temperature. Bose lists a USB cable in the box, but no wall power adaptor.

Features and setup guidance checked against Bose's product information, its SoundLink Home owner's guide and official specifications.
